What is wrong with this picture?

An original plaque notes the monument was “erected to commemorate the advent into Ontario of the white race”. The almost 4-metre tall bronze statue shows the French explorer, Champlain, in full court dress atop a base flanked on one side by two Indigenous people looking up to a Jesuit priest, and on the other, two more looking up at a fur trader. Unveiled in 1925, the crumbling monument was taken down in 2017.

St. Cuthbert’s, Leaside invites you to join in the process of gaining an understanding of Canada’s first peoples, profoundly affected by the European Doctrine of Discovery, and Canada’s Indian Act.

1. Watch the online video, Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts. https://www.anglican.ca/primate/tfc/drj/doctrineofdiscovery/

2. See how the Truth and Reconciliation process is enabling us to hear and appreciate those Indigenous voices.

3. Then participate in a virtual discussion via Webex on Sunday November 15 from 1.30pm-2.30pm. For sign-in information, contact the church office by Friday, November 13, 416-485-0329 or email .
