Earlier this summer, long time TDSB Ward 11 school trustee Gerri Gershon announced she would not be running for re-election this coming October. This has opened the door for what is shaping up to be an interesting and important electoral race as seven candidates are running to fill the position.
It is the responsibility of the TDSB trustees to create the vision and direction for Toronto’s public schools and its students. Working with school and city staff, they are collectively responsible for balancing an annual $3 billion budget.
Running for election are north Leaside resident and former Northlea Home & School Chair Rachel Chernos Lin; former provincial NDP candidate and community organizer Amara Possian; Davisville resident and journalist Stavros Rougas; and Toronto resident Jennifer Hinder. Rounding out the field of candidates are Haman Mamdouhi, Abdi Yousuf and Hafiz Abdul Sattar Khan.
In the TCDSB trustee election, long-time incumbent Angela Kennedy will be running for re-election. Kennedy commented, “I am running for my sixth term and I have been the trustee for the past 20 years. I am passionate about supporting parents as they advocate for their children.” Also expected to run are Kevin Morrison and Anna Sajnovic.
