Councillor John Parker went back to his old geology books last month when the constuction company building the new Leaside Gardens arena found a two-metre-long boulder nearby.
It’s smooth, resembles a baked potato and looks like something left behind during the last ice age more than 10,000 years ago, he says.
“I hope to do some more research and then seek approval from the arena board of management to put the boulder on display. I think it might be nice to feature it together with a suitable plaque providing a few words of geological background and a word of thanks to the crews who arranged for the display to be made possible,” said Parker.
He said Leo Giovannelli, of Gio Construction, recognized the find as something that deserved special attention. “I was impressed that Leo took the trouble to get in touch,” said Parker.
Construction workers and an arena crews moved the boulder to an out-of-the-way spot for now.
