Program description: This is class will provide an introduction to Japanese Zen Yoga. This style comes to us from traditional Japanese martial arts, as a form of healing injuries and developing the body’s strength, flexibility and endurance. Mental clarity and peace of mind are also cultivated, as well as the keeping of spiritual qualities (Justice, Courage, Mercy, Politeness, Honesty and Sincerity, Honor, Loyalty, Character and Self-Control) as a base of yoga practice and life. You will review traditional concepts of energy flow through meridians and energy centres in the body, and will practice basic Zen Yoga healing techniques. Zen Yoga differs from Indian yoga styles as it is focused on dynamic movements, powerful breathing techniques, and producing heat in the abdominal area (Hara/Tanden). Special energy points/tsubo are also used to facilitate the harmonic distribution of accumulated heat in the body. Zen Yoga exercises are performed mainly while sitting or lying on a floor mat.
