In Brief

The 132nd Toronto Scout Group, at Leaside Presbyterian Church, is selling garden products, including birch trees, to help send 12 Scouts and four leaders to the Canadian Jamboree in Alberta in July, as well as “providing financial support for a couple of deserving youth”.

There’s a suggested donation of $50 that buys a minimum four-foot native white birch, delivery and planting. There will also be a garage sale. For information: Shauna Davies, 416-201-1941, .

Leaside will be well stocked for booze when the new LCBO super-sized store, with a beer cold room, a large Vintages area and a tasting bar opens in the SmartCentre about mid September. It will be 12,843 square feet, about 80 percent larger than the current store beside Sobeys, but not close to the big one on Yonge at Summerhill.

Within a short walking or driving distance there are now wine stores at Loblaws Redway, Longo’s at Leaside Village and Metro at Bayview and Eglinton.  There are beer stores at Leaside Village and at Bayview and Eglinton. And there is now the new small LCBO store on Bayview at Millwood. Meanwhile some convenience stores have petitions customers can sign asking that beer be sold there.
